Relaxing Seaside
Elder's
Natural History Museum
We finally took the plunge and took all the kids down to London for the day, using the tube and all. It actually went just fine and we didn't lose anyone! Brennan was little nervous at first, but he loved it after a while and finally was getting out of his stroller to enjoy the ride even more. We decided it would be fun to go and spend the day at the Natural History Museum, and spend the day we did! The Schmidt's and ourselves spent about 6.5 hours in there and only saw a fraction of what they have in the museum. So the kids definitely want to go back and explore some more!
We did learn that the whale bones they have hanging from the ceiling there were from whales that they buried on site of the museum in the 30's and then after decomp they dug them up and put them in the museum.
All the kids (and Toni) had a great time playing with the weighing machine. You chose an animal and it told you how many of you it would take to make one of which ever animal you had selected. Taylor and Carter could have spent all day on there, and I just loved Toni's face in this one :)
You had to go through the Dinosaur section of the museum and after the robotic T-Rex we had the kids take a picture by the big head. Brennan was pretty nervous, but finally touched it for about half a second. I don't know how I caught the moment he touched it--but it worked out. Justice was not having any of it! She wouldn't even pretend to smile from 5 feet away, it was pretty funny and gave us parents the chance to torture the poor wee one while trying to get a picture.
Next was a small model that you had to move like a dinosaur's legs would have moved. It was actually pretty hard to move the things, and Carter wasn't going to leave until he was an expert walker! Good thing he figured it out, we would have been there even longer.
The kids loved the human body section of the museum as well, Carter especially loved that they had from the beginning of life ie sperm and egg, and then had huge displays showing exactly how it all works, and then the growth of the fetus to giving birth. Then it was on to the memory section, and us grown ups may have had more fun playing the games than the kids did.Monday, July 18, 2011
Last fun together
William Wallace Monument
Edinburgh Marathon

After months of training and hard work the big day was finally here!!! I have started to train for a marathon twice before and both times we were blessed with little additions to our family and my training wasn't far enough long to continue. :) This time I was determined that I would finish this race!! I had the added bonus that my mom decided she was going to also run in the marathon. I just need to take a moment and remind everyone this is the same woman who was literally falling over and had horrible balance last time she was visiting us. She had been working so hard to get back to her walking and this was a perfect challenge for her. I was so excited and also a little anxious to be a part of this huge accomplishment with my mom.
It was cold, wet, and my stomach was turning with nerves as we headed for our start line. I had my phone with me and used it to take a couple pictures at the start. My mom and I had decided that we were running for different reasons, running different races and so we would just spend the beginning together and then if one of us went ahead it was fine.
I felt like I was having an out of body experience at this point, how did I get to the start of a marathon and how did I plan on finishing. It was a crazy feeling, but I felt confident that I would be able to finish because I knew I had trained hard and put in the right amount of miles. So off we went on this grand adventure!
I just kept running and running and was feeling pretty good, I didn't like to see mile markers because it was hard to get into my own head and then the ultimate challenge for me began. The race course actually passes the finish line at about 9.5 miles and then you watch as runners are going to the finish while you are still headed out to the turning point. That part was the most difficult for me..mostly because I am super competitive. I had a hard time ignoring these people who were headed to the finish line so much quicker than I was. So it was a challenge, but overall I thought I did okay with staying in my brain and not letting it bother me to much. At 17 miles you turn around that outer loop of the course and head back into the finish. HOLY WIND!!! The wind was fore casted, and it did not disappoint. There were times when the head wind was literally pushing me backwards! It was a tough last 9 miles and at about mile 22 all I could think about was finishing and finding the nearest cheeseburger!
The finish was awesome, mostly because I knew I was done. However, I couldn't find Mike, my dad or the kids, didn't see them anywhere and didn't know where to go to find them. So I was just texting Mike and asking him where they were. I was all alone so I took my own picture at the finish line :) gorgeous I know. I also wanted to wait and see my mom finish. We had passed each other when I had made the turn and she was headed towards the finish still. So that was a neat moment on the course, just to stop for a minute and give each other a big hug. It raised my spirits a lot to see her still going and gave me extra motivation to finish myself.
I have decided that although I was pleased to finish I wanted to do it under 5 hours and ended up with 5:37:49
So the challenge with my own self begins and I definitely plan on doing another Marathon--Dublin sounds fabulous next year :) Who knows, maybe London if I can get in.
